Annual Pete Seeger Birthday Bash this Saturday in Lake Worth Beach
Meet the Lake Worth Beach couple who honor their friend, the late folk icon Pete Seeger, with an annual singalong on the anniversary of his birth.
Happy birthday, Pete Seeger!
Some old friends of the folk icon who died in 2014 are hosting an annual singalong in downtown Lake Worth Beach, this one commemorating the 106th anniversary of his birth.
Maryellen Healy and Vincent Cerniglia — better known as the Lake Worth Beach troubadors Mel and Vinnie — will gather with anyone who’s interested at the Lake Worth Beach Library at 15 N M St. starting at 5 p.m.
It’s a pot luck event, so bring food — and bring your voices and acoustic instruments for a song circle that starts at 5:30 p.m.
But also be sure to social distance from co-host Vinnie, who has been undergoing treatment for a recent cancer diagnosis.
“He is immunocompromised now until the treatments are over but the doc said if he's feeling up to it and we mask and distance, we can do the May 3rd Pete Birthday Party in the library community room,’’ Mel said.
“We get 30 people more or less, and I have friends who will help out with set up, potluck and breakdown so we will be able to sit in the circle and sing, play and listen.’’
Vinnie is in good spirits and looking forward to the song circle.
“Fatigue is the main symptom right now,’’ Mel said. “We are guardedly optimistic. He's got a great attitude and great care with Cleveland Clinic in Weston.’’
Mel and Vinnie are amateur folk musicians who met Seeger in 1978 and 1981, respectively, and remained friends until he died in 2014.
